📋 About Service Dog IDs
Is a service dog ID legally required?
No. Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), service dogs are not required to have any ID, certification, registration, or special vest.
However, many handlers find that having an ID card helps avoid awkward situations and speeds up access to businesses.
What can businesses ask about my service dog?
Under the ADA, businesses can only ask two questions:
- Is this a service animal required because of a disability?
- What work or task has the dog been trained to perform?
They cannot require documentation or ID, ask about your disability, or request the dog demonstrate its task.
Is this an official government ID?
No. This is a convenience ID card that documents your self-declared eligibility as a service dog handler.
There is no government registry for service dogs in the United States, and no ID is legally required under the ADA.
This digital ID simply makes it easier to show information about your service dog when needed.
